Equine-facilitated coaching provides a unique opportunity for clients to find their own solutions to problems through a process of experiential learning and immediate feedback. This is the most productive way to learn new personal leadership skills, as it ensures real change and long-term benefits.
In any environment you have the opportunity to use your unique approach to the way you interact with others. When you work with the horse to complete specific activities, you rely on this same approach to accomplish the task. If your approach is unsuccessful, you react in the same way you would with other humans. Through the horse’s response, you can discover that some of your behaviours are ineffective, or even detrimental. To achieve success, you are compelled to try new approaches. In this way you learn to examine your behaviour, confront and overcome your fears, develop new mental and emotional strategies for interaction, accept responsibility for the outcomes of your decisions and get insight what makes you unique and splendid.
Through a series of interactions with a horse, both in a solo and group setting, you will:
No previous experience with horses or horse-riding required.
Why should we consider the horse as a teacher, partner and facilitator in our personal development and psychological well-being? The answer, plain and simple, is that we have a deeply rooted respect for this beautiful enormous animal expressed so often in our literature as noble, majestic and powerful – all characteristics we revere . At the same time, this mighty archetypal presence is a vulnerable animal that can flee at the sight of a paper-bag being blown in the wind – a state that we can often identify with. In this polarity lies the magic of the horse.
The horse by its nature possesses the qualities we want from a therapist or coach. It is keenly and empathetically aware of whom we are, how we feel, what we do and how we relate to it. It has no opinion on what the right things are for us to do, what our potential is, and how we should live it, or what it will say about its ability as facilitator if we do. It does not allow us to get away with manipulation, ambivalence, incongruence, justifications, guilt trips, coercion, or pretending to interact with it whilst in a dissociative state. It does not try to rescue, patronise or manipulate us. It keeps things simple: it sticks to its business of being a horse, does not care about our business and do not fret about how things should be in the relationship. It is consistent, direct and not scared of telling us what the impact of our internal state or behaviour is. It asks of us consistency, presence, respect, authenticity, awareness, focus and clear communication in the partnership.
"Where in this wide world can men find nobility without pride, Friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity? Here where grace is laced with power and strength tempered by gentleness He serves without servility, he has force without enmity. There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent. The is nothing so quick., nothing more patient. Our pioneers were borne on his back, our history is in his industry. We are his heirs and he is our inheritance...
The horse."
